The Spinning Heart

Comparative · 2027 & 2028 Leaving Cert

Donal Ryan’s debut novel gives you twenty-one voices from one small Irish village in the wreckage of the 2008 crash. It is a short book that carries a lot of weight, and it works hard for you in the Comparative.

The Spinning Heart is told in twenty-one chapters, and each one belongs to a different person from the same rural community. That structure is the whole point: you never get a single narrator who tells you what to think. Instead you hear the same crash, the same building site, the same families circled from twenty-one angles, and you have to piece the truth together yourself. The man most of the village watches is Bobby Mahon, a foreman left stranded when his employer goes under. Bobby is decent, well-liked, and quietly furious at his father, Frank, a violent old man Bobby has spent his whole life half-wishing dead.

The trouble starts with Pokey Burke, the developer who ran the building firm Bobby worked for. When the property boom collapses, Pokey vanishes, leaving behind unpaid workers, a half-finished housing estate, and families who discover their stamps were never paid, so there is no dole to fall back on. The abandoned site sits at the centre of the village like a wound. Around it Ryan builds smaller, sharper crises: a marriage curdling, a young mother adrift, and a child abduction that pulls the community’s fears and suspicions to the surface. Because every chapter is a fresh narrator, you watch reputations get made and unmade depending on who is talking, which is exactly what makes the book so rich for comparison.
