The abandoned site sits at the centre of the village like a wound. Around it Ryan builds smaller, sharper crises: a marriage curdling, a young mother adrift, and a child abduction that pulls the community’s fears and suspicions to the surface. Because every chapter is a fresh narrator, you watch reputations get made and unmade depending on who is talking, which is exactly what makes the book so rich for comparison.
