Claudia Piñeiro’s short Argentine novel follows one woman across one impossible day. If you want a comparative text that is sharp, strange and easy to remember, this is a strong one.

Elena Knows (originally Elena sabe, 2007; English translation by Frances Riddle, Charco Press, 2021) is built around a refusal. Elena’s daughter Rita has been found dead, hanging from the bell tower of their local church in suburban Buenos Aires. The police and the priest call it suicide and close the case. Elena does not believe them for one simple reason: it was raining that day, and Rita was terrified of the church bell tower in the rain. So Elena sets out to prove that her daughter was murdered, and to find someone who will investigate when nobody else will.

The catch is that Elena has advanced Parkinson’s disease. Her body no longer obeys her. She measures the day not in hours but in pills: the levodopa that lets her lift her head, take a step, and keep moving before the illness shuts her down again. The whole novel takes place during this one journey across the city, by train and on foot, to reach a woman called Isabel, whom Elena and Rita once helped years before. Elena is sure Isabel owes her a debt and will repay it by taking up the search for Rita’s killer. What she finds when she gets there turns everything she thought she knew inside out.

It is a slim book, but it carries a lot: a mother who cannot let go, a daughter we only meet through memory, a controlling Church, and a body in revolt. For the Comparative course it pairs well with texts about illness, family, power and the gap between what we believe and what is true.

Two things make it manageable as a study text. First, it is short and the action covers a single day, so the structure is easy to hold in your head. Second, almost everything that matters happens through a handful of strong, named moments: the refusal to accept the verdict, the journey measured out in pills, the flashbacks to life with Rita, and the meeting with Isabel that pulls the rug out at the end. Learn those well and you can answer a wide range of questions without drowning in plot detail.
