Hamlet

Higher Level · 2028 Leaving Cert

Hamlet is the prescribed Shakespearean play for Higher Level students sitting the 2028 Leaving Cert. It is the single text most students either love or fear, often both at once. The story itself is simple: a prince is visited by his dead father’s ghost, told to avenge a murder, and then spends most of the play not doing it. What makes it an exam favourite is everything packed into that delay, a mind talking itself in circles, a royal court built on lies, and a son who cannot decide whether thinking or acting is the braver thing to do. If you can explain why Hamlet hesitates, you can answer almost any question the examiner sets on this play.
